Andrew Heaton welcomes you to the
Heaton Family Online

My interest in family history developed when I retired from dairy farming, leaving more time to pursue the many stories and connections within the Heaton family’s past. The passing of my father Allan in 2012 initiated the publication of Never Had a Better in which the Heaton family’s history has been traced back over 1000 years.

This research unearthed the family links to medieval times and the de Heton Family Links with the early days of Kirkheaton and Mirfield Parish Churches which I published separately.

The benefit of publishing these revealing findings lies in the amount of feed-back I have received from around the world. This information encouraged me to write Hannah’s American Dream, the story of Hannah, a distant Aunt on my father’s maternal side, who left Yorkshire in 1842 for a new life in Wisconsin.

My mother Mary’s lifelong collection of sheepdog trialling memorabilia was discovered in its entirety following her death in 2017. I found my first book, Sheep Dog Trials 1960, written as a nine year old, which I have reproduced on this website “just for fun”!

Of more interest to the Sheepdog Trialling fraternity are my mother’s collection of “scrapbooks” which I felt should not remain in a box in the attic forever. I have scanned, edited and published the scrapbooks in a manner which maintains their authenticity, condensing them into two collections entitled Mary Heaton’s Sheepdog Scrapbook.

 In 2019 I published -   “H E A T O N S  O F  W O R T H”-
This selection of short stories, illustrated by period photographs, documents 500 years of the Heaton family’s association with Yorkshire’s Worth Valley. From farming, industry and commerce to religious belief, love of music and education, the Heatons have left a powerful legacy seen today in both the local community and farther afield.

My involvement with the project to restore Dockroyd Graveyard, where more than a hundred Heaton family members are buried, culminated in my latest publication “Dockroyd Live”. This handbook of the graveyard contains the family history stories, burial records, memorial inscriptions and photographs of all the 770 graves as well as a photo gallery of the Restoration Project.

The purpose of establishing this website is to record for posterity my Heaton family’s history and share the memories with others for our mutual enjoyment. I welcome any information that can increase our knowledge and understanding.
